Foam plants

(in accordance with UNI EN 13565 - 1 2008 and NFPA/UNI EN 13565 - 2009)

In addition to traditional extinguishing systems that use water as an extinguishing element, in some cases it is necessary to add a foaming element to the water. These types of systems are combined with traditional pressurization groups which can be underground or external.

Technical features

Our foam fire prevention system called RIGHETTO FOAM SYSTEM is basically made up of:

  • Fire fighting water reserve tank
  • Fire pressurization unit
  • Pre-mixer (tank and mixer) with liquid displacement (foaming)
  • Control / alarm valve(s)
  • .Nozzles / Lances / Generators for A.E._

The foam is contained in a tank of predetermined capacity sized according to the risk to be protected. Inside the tank there is a rubberized fabric membrane which contains the foam. The membrane prevents the foam agent stored in the tank from coming into contact with the water and the wall of the container, thus avoiding dilution, possible contamination of the foam agent and corrosion of the tank

Foam is a very effective fire extinguishing agent, composed of water, foam and air. It is particularly suitable for class A fires (tyres, plastic, etc.) and class B fires (flammable and combustible liquids such as hydrocarbons, paints, solvents, petrol, etc.). The foam puts out fires basically for:

  • Cooling: the evaporation of the water contained in the foam removes heat from the fire.
  • Suffocation: the dense layer of foam creates a barrier that prevents contact with oxygen (oxidizing).
  • Insulation: preventive foaming protects materials from nearby fires.
  • Blanket effect: the foam layer prevents the escape of combustible vapors into the air.
  • There are basically three types of foam fire prevention systems depending on the characteristics of the area to be protected:
  • Low expansion foam with expansion ratio 1:4 1:20 (surface fires). This type of foam ensures remarkable sliding, floats on liquids and adheres to inclined surfaces
  • Medium expansion foam with an expansion ratio of 1:20 1:200 (surface fires). It is a fluid and light foam but compact and capable of absorbing heat._x005F_x000D_
  • High expansion foam with expansion ratio 1:200 1:1000 (volume fires). It is particularly dry and light and allows complete saturation of entire closed environments/compartments

The actual pre-mixer is represented by the foam storage tank and a line mixer (Venturi tube) inserted in the fire-fighting water pipe which feeds the system through the fire-fighting pressurisation unit. When the system is activated for intervention, the pressurized water pressing on the wall of the membrane of the foam tank moves the liquid in a pipe equipped with a calibrated orifice which allows a predetermined percentage of foaming agent to flow (usually 3% or 6%) to the mixer.

This predetermined quantity of foaming agent is diluted with water in the mixer pushed along the system pipes and then emulsified with air in equipment downstream of the system called nozzles, lances or generators designed to produce foam according to the required expansion ratio.
